Tour of Latemar

This path has three access points: Obereggen, Pampeago, and Predazzo.

Departure from Pampeago or Predazzo

For the first part of the path, you will have to follow the indications for the excursion to Torre di Pisa, in order to reach the first destination of our itinerary.

Once you have reached the summit, continue along path no. 516 towards Forcella dei Camosci. After a first section with a slightly technical slope, you will reach the Latemar basin, or amphitheater, which is flat and rather pleasant. Here you will enjoy a peculiar scenery, almost lunar. In about half an hour, you will reach the mountain pass, before which there is a short uphill section. Along the path, you will also notice other distinctive elements of Latemar, such as the Schenon (big back), before which Forcella dei Campanili marks the beginning of the Campanili via ferrata, a spectacular path along the ridge with breath-taking sceneries, which ends at Bivacco Rigatti.

In Forcella dei Camosci, you will take path no. 18. At first, this is a tight path with debris which can be walked through easily by paying a little attention. Subsequently, the path becomes wider and you will enter a series of labyrinth-like views, characterised by huge boulders and surrounded by highly typical pinnacles and peaks.

You will then reach a steeper slope, with gravel which is slightly slippery, but not dangerous. The end of this section is marked by an earthy plain where you can stop and admire the wide panorama of the Ega Valley and of the Bolzano basin, with the Renon plateau and the Palla Bianca on the background.

The slope will start again on the partly detrital and partly grassy crag, and it will zig-zag downhill to the Rifugio Oberholz. You may then take path no. 23 which goes through Malga Mayrl and go back to the Latemar chair lift of Pampeago or to the Feudo Pass for the subsequent descent to Predazzo.

  • Duration: 5/6 hours
  • Difference in heights: 780 M from both starting points
  • Highest point: 2681 meters
  • Level: HARD (EE)

Departure from Obereggen

For the first part of the path, you will have to follow the indications for the excursion to Torre di Pisa, in order to reach the first destination of our itinerary.

From Rifugio Torre di Pisa, continue along path no. 516. The first sloping section will be on a rocky path, with steps and partly with scree. Once you have passed the initial part of the path, it will become wider and easier to hike. You will meet wooden steps before a short rocky gully. Once you have passed this, a small scree will take you to a part of the trail which is even better. During your descent, you will see the town of Predazzo on your left. A sweet grassy pass preceeds a further sloping part on the gravel, which is slippery but not dangerous. You will easily reach the cross with path no. 22, which you will need to take towards the Oberholz chair lift. This is an extremely pleasant, and nicely-sloping path. If you pass near the Absam chair lift, you will go along a path with ups and downs which are easy to hike, and which will take you to the Oberholz chair lift for the subsequent descent to Obereggen.
